Robert L. Begleiter is one of the founding lawyers of Constantine Cannon. He has been a member of the firm since October 1994. He specializes in commercial civil litigation. Until October 1994, Mr. Begleiter was Chief of the Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York. The Civil Division has 42 attorneys and litigates more than 1,000 cases a year. It represents the United States in virtually all the litigation in which the United States is involved in the Eastern District. Mr. Begleiter was for nine years, the first-line supervisor responsible for management and all litigation of the division. In this capacity, Mr. Begleiter guided the Civil Division from an office that primarily defended the United States to an office that is in the forefront of affirmative civil law enforcement. The Civil Division is now a leader in such areas as asset forfeiture, Civil RICO, and False Claims Act litigation. Mr. Begleiter has extensive litigation experience. He has conducted more than 40 trials in federal court, has argued more than 20 appeals, and has supervised hundreds of trials and appeals conducted by members of his staff. Mr. Begleiter has handled or supervised a broad spectrum of cases involving such subjects as Civil RICO, asset forfeiture, money laundering, fines and penalties, fraud, personal injury, employment discrimination and civil rights. Mr. Begleiter was among the government attorneys defending the United States in the class action brought by Haitian immigrants detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He is a recipient of the Department of Justice's Director's Award. Among Mr. Begleiter's accomplishments was guiding the government's efforts to reform the Long Island carting industry, removing corruption from several labor locals, and overseeing the collection of more than $300,000,000.00 in asset forfeiture, False Claims Act and other types of monetary relief for the United States. Mr. Begleiter has been an instructor and adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School since 1985. He currently teaches trial advocacy. He has lectured before law enforcement agencies and Bar Associations on diverse topics. Mr. Begleiter was named by Law & Politics as a New York Super Lawyer for 2007. Click here to read announcement. From 1973 to 1977, Mr. Begleiter was an attorney with a Legal Services office in Brooklyn, New York. In 1996, Mr. Begleiter was appointed to be a part-time Administrative Law Judge for the City of New York. Mr. Begleiter graduated from N.Y.U. School of Law in 1972 and the College of the City of New York in 1968. |
