Kerin E. Coughlin joined Constantine Cannon as an attorney in March 2004. Ms. Coughlin concentrates her practice on antitrust and general commercial litigation. Since joining the firm, she has researched issues expected to arise in an anticipated antitrust litigation, assisted in discovery regarding alleged unfair business practices in the marketing field, and prepared the pre-hearing brief for an arbitration to resolve a real estate tax dispute. Between law school and the commencement of her federal judicial clerkship in March 2003, Ms. Coughlin worked for the Federal Trade Commission's Northeast Region. There, she investigated alleged violations of federal antitrust and consumer protection laws, served as second-chair to the lead attorney during several depositions, reviewed document productions for evidence of conduct and compliance with Commission requests, and researched and drafted internal memoranda and correspondence with the Commission regarding ongoing investigations. During her year-long clerkship for United States Magistrate Judge Debra Freeman in the Southern District of New York, Ms. Coughlin was involved in all types of cases, from copyright infringement to civil rights to securities litigation. She researched and drafted reports and recommendations, memoranda, orders and other documents that issued from the Court, participated in courtroom proceedings, status conferences and settlement negotiations, and generally managed the Court's docket. Before going to law school, Ms. Coughlin had a career as a junior high school Social Studies teacher in the New York City public schools. Ms. Coughlin discovered her interest in antitrust law when she studied the subject with Professor Harvey J. Goldschmid, who later became a Commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. To increase the depth of her knowledge, Ms. Coughlin secured a Research Assistantship with Professor Goldschmid, through which she researched developments in antitrust law and drafted text that was included in the Fifth Edition of his Trade Regulation casebook, published in 2003. Ms. Coughlin further developed her antitrust expertise, in combination with her academic background in financial services, in writing her Note, "ATM Surcharges Violate the Public Policies that Underlie the Antitrust Laws," which was published in the Spring 2002 issue of the Columbia Journal of Law & Social Problems ("JLSP"). Ms. Coughlin graduated from Columbia Law School in May 2002, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and a Managing Editor of JLSP. Ms. Coughlin also holds a Master of Arts in Urban Studies from Queens College, where she received the Herbert Bienstock Research Award for her thesis, "The Community Reinvestment Act: Twenty-Five Years Later," and she received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the State University of New York at Albany in 1992. Ms. Coughlin is a member of the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association and New York Women Antitrust Lawyers. She is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey, and before the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. |
